The Field Trip Society

a season of delights

This past year has been so full of ups, downs, upside downs and cartwheels. Here’s to a collective raising of the glass for making it through, a feat nothing short of heroic. And while there is much to feel hopeful about, these last days of pandemic existence plod at a glacial pace. If you are feeling discouraged, depressed or just plain bored, you are not alone.

When faced with darkness, we’ve found it helpful to focus on that which delights. May these ideas bring sparks of joy your way this month.

The Mouse Gallery Project. One of the best things of the last year is the surge of creativity that has come from so much time inside. We are especially charmed by this mini-gallery, accepting submissions now!

We know that houseplants improve the indoor air quality and aesthetics of our homes, but studies show they also improve mental health and reduce stress . This month, City People’s Garden Store is offering one on one plant consultations by appointment. Bring in a problem plant for diagnosis, get help repotting, or find the right plants for lighting conditions and space. Going green never felt so good.

If you’re feeling uninspired by meal planning, add a dose of the wild with a CSA subscription from Foraged and Found Edibles. In addition to being delicious, native wild greens and fungi are packed with vitamins and nutrients to give a kick-start to spring wellness.

Go all in on spring with a tin still-life from Emily Wamsley, a wild seasonal wreath from Fortunate Orchard or a bright new nail polish from Claws Out.

As the artist and illustrator behind our favorite books, exhibitions, and performances, we LOVE all things Maira Kalman. We’re counting the days to spend the evening with Maira and Seattle Arts & Lectures on March 15th.

Two things that have saved us this year: birding and podcasts. Like a peanut butter cup, we can’t wait to delve into some of these birding podcasts.

Last month we mentioned L’Oursin’s après-ski fondue service - quite possible our finest afternoon of the past year. It was so amazing that we are already planning for March 19th when they begin service for Le Plateau Royale . Two words: WORTH. IT.

After a year of virtual learning, the kids are ready to get outside. Celebrate the spring season at the Kubota Garden with family Exploration Kits complete with treasure maps and scavenger hunts.

Parable of Gravity at Mad Art Seattle through April 17th, schedule an appointment to wander through an immersive and otherworldly kinetic garden, free and open to the public.

Celebrate the rainbow and beat the crowds with a day-trip to the Tulip Festival later this month. Don’t forget to stop at the Taylor Shellfish outdoor oyster bar while you’re in the neighborhood!
